Google IO and Hangouts

I missed the Google IO live stream and had to follow the event from my Nexus4, something that didn’t work out very well while being at an offsite driving Go-kart.

Anyhow, I expected much more from this google event. The Babel rumour that circled before has been released with the name Google Hangout, something I failed to install this morning due to some gradual rollout…

NOTE: If you aren’t yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store “Open” button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included! Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android and Apple devices. Brought to you by Google.

The app seems to miss quite a bit of important features if you read the comments at Google Play.

How do you see who’s online?

In my opinion the app should fall back to SMS if the user is offline. Remove the built in message app and replace it with hangouts. Everything should be in the same place if Google want to compete with Apples iMessages.
